The goose was kind, the air was thin, the rivers all turned amber-skin. And Amos, hat-strap snug and tight, rode autumn home into the night.

One paw, one breath, one quiet star, the lanterns glow from near and far. He does not fall. He does not run. He simply walks, from none to one.

IV. The Kitchen

Take a thimble of butter, a whisper of thyme, stir it slow, give it time. What you cook with care — a mouse will share, and share again, when the kettle’s there.

The city had a thousand rooftops and not one of them belonged to him. Still, Amos walked them all, looking for a crumb of starlight, no bigger than a tooth.
